How to use this receipt generator
- Select “Receipt” at the top of the editor.
- Enter who paid you in “Received from”.
- List what was paid for, with quantities and prices.
- Set the payment date and the payment method (cash, card, bank transfer, mobile money reference).
- Download the PDF or print it for the customer.
What to include on a receipt
- Your business name and contact details (and tax number if you are registered).
- A unique receipt number and the date of payment.
- Who paid, what they paid for, and the amount.
- How they paid — with a transaction or reference number for electronic payments.
- Any tax included, if you charge it.
Some countries have specific rules for receipts and till slips, especially for businesses registered for tax. Check what applies to you.
Partial payments
If the customer paid only part of the amount, untick “Paid in full” and enter what they paid. The receipt then shows the amount paid and the balance remaining, and the PAID stamp is hidden.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a receipt and an invoice?
An invoice asks for payment; a receipt confirms that payment was made. Read our guide on invoice vs receipt for details.
Can I make a receipt for a cash payment?
Yes. Enter “Cash” as the payment method. A receipt is especially useful for cash, since there is no bank record.
Can I record a mobile money or bank reference?
Yes — put it in the payment method field, for example “M-Pesa, ref QX12AB34” or “Bank transfer, ref 4471”.
Can I turn an invoice into a receipt after it is paid?
Yes. Open the invoice from your documents, switch the type to Receipt and it gets a receipt number and “Amount paid” wording. Save it to keep both.
