What an Irish VAT invoice must show
Revenue expects a VAT invoice to include:
- the date of issue and a unique sequential number
- your name, address and VAT registration number
- the customer’s name and address, and their VAT number for intra-EU sales or reverse-charge supplies
- the quantity and nature of the goods or the extent and nature of the services
- the date of supply, if different from the invoice date
- the price excluding VAT, the VAT rate, any discount and the VAT amount
For reverse-charge supplies, add a note such as “VAT reverse charge” in the notes. See Revenue’s VAT invoice guidance on revenue.ie.
Rates, registration and e-invoicing
Rates: 23% is the standard rate. Reduced rates of 13.5% and 9% and the zero rate apply to some goods and services; check Revenue’s VAT rates database. Choose “Per item” for mixed rates.
Not registered? Don’t charge VAT or show a VAT number. Use a normal invoice template. You must register once your turnover goes over Revenue’s thresholds; check the current figures on revenue.ie.
E-invoicing: Ireland plans to phase in mandatory e-invoicing for business-to-business sales over the next few years, in line with EU rules. It is not in force for most businesses yet, so a PDF VAT invoice is still accepted. Check Revenue for the latest timeline.
