How to use this progress invoice
- Put the contract or project number in “PO / reference”.
- Name the stage or percentage complete and the total contract value.
- Add approved variations as their own lines.
- In Notes, show the total invoiced to date and what is left.
- Download the PDF and send it with photos or a short progress report.
Stage billing vs percentage of completion
Stage (milestone) billing fixes amounts in advance: for example 25% at each of four stages. Percentage of completion bills the share of work actually done in each period, which is common on larger building contracts, sometimes as an “application for payment”. Either way, each progress invoice should show the contract value, what was billed before, this invoice and the remainder, so nobody loses track.
Interim invoices and the final invoice
Progress invoices are real tax invoices and take the next number in your sequence. When the job is done, issue a final invoice for the remaining balance. For trade-specific layouts see the construction invoice template or web design milestone invoice.
