E-invoicing in Switzerland: what you need to know

Switzerland has no general e-invoicing mandate. The federal administration requires e-invoices from larger suppliers, and many consumers pay through eBill. For everyone else the QR-bill is the standard.

Quick answer

There is no B2B e-invoicing mandate in Switzerland; PDF and paper invoices are fine. Since 2016, suppliers to the federal administration must send e-invoices when the contract is worth CHF 5,000 or more. For consumers, eBill delivers bills straight into online banking, and the QR-bill has been the standard payment slip since October 2022.

Invoicing the federal administration

If your contract with a federal office is worth CHF 5,000 or more, you must send an e-invoice. The federal administration accepts them through its e-invoice service providers and the Peppol network, or by uploading a PDF on its supplier portal. Cantons and municipalities have their own rules. Check the details with the authority that placed the order.

eBill and QR-bill

  • eBill is the Swiss banks’ system for sending bills straight into the customer’s online banking. Billers join through their bank or a provider.
  • The QR-bill is a payment part with a Swiss QR Code at the bottom of the invoice. It is not an e-invoice, but it contains the payment data so it can be paid by scanning.

Where Invoiceferry fits

Invoiceferry makes PDF invoices and prints a QR-bill automatically when the business IBAN is Swiss or Liechtenstein and the currency is CHF or EUR. It can also export Peppol BIS 3.0 XML. It does not send invoices through eBill, Peppol or any federal portal. See the Switzerland invoice template.
